Position Advantage Strategy

Why position is the most powerful weapon in poker. Learn to exploit it at every table.

📍 Why Position Is Everything

🎯 "In poker, position is power." — Late position players act with more information than early position players. This advantage compounds over every betting round.

🎯 Three Position Advantages

1. 📡 Information Advantage

Early PositionLate Position
Act blind — don't know who's interestedSee everyone act before you
Can't steal blinds easilyCan steal when everyone folds

2. 🎛️ Pot Control

In position you can:

  • Check behind for a free card
  • Control pot size on each street
  • Extract maximum value with the last bet
  • 3. 🃏 Bluff Success Rate

📊 Bluffs from late position succeed significantly more often because you can represent more hands and apply more pressure.

    📋 Position-Based Ranges

    🔴 Early Position (UTG)

    Pairs: 99+
    Suited: AJs+, KQs
    Offsuit: AQo+
    Play: ~8-10% of hands

    🟡 Middle Position (HJ, CO)

    Pairs: 77+
    Suited: ATs+, KJs+, QJs, JTs, 87s+
    Offsuit: AJo+, KQo
    Play: ~15-20% of hands

    🟢 Late Position (BTN)

    Pairs: 22+
Suited: All Ax, Kx, most Qx, all suited connectors
    Offsuit: Many Broadway combos
    Play: ~30-40% of hands

    ⚡ Key Position Plays

    🏴‍☠️ Stealing Blinds

When everyone folds to you on CO/BTN:
  • Raise wide to steal blinds
  • Blinds often have weak holdings
  • Even if called, you have position
  • 🔥 Continuation Bet (C-bet)

In position as the preflop raiser:
  • C-bet frequently on dry boards
  • Especially when opponent checks (shows weakness)
  • ~60-70% pot size is standard
  • 🎭 Delayed C-bet

Sometimes check behind on the flop:
  • Disguises your hand strength
  • Controls pot size
  • Induces bluffs on later streets

  • ⚠️ Position Traps

    TrapWhat HappensFix
Defending blinds too widePlay garbage OOP, bleed moneyBe selective — fold marginal hands
Ignoring opponent awarenessVs clueless players, position matters lessAdapt to opponent skill level
Getting too loose on BTNPosition advantage ≠ license to play any twoStill have standards

💡 "Play tight from early position, loose from late position. This alone will make you a winning player."
